The term is used in most home magazines and on many of the popular television home shows. Well, nothing gives you more color than annuals at the entrance of your home or commercial property. It gets your attention and sets the mood!

This is not an overstatement. Make the comparison yourself. Think about a site you’ve seen recently with no color and then compare it to one blooming with color. You can see and feel the difference. Color offers vitality. Isn’t that what you want your entrance to say? It’s the first impression someone has of your home or commercial property.

Have you ever wished someone would just tell you what is wrong with your shrubs? And while they are at it, what’s with the turf, why is it spotty and yellow? What is pH and what does it have to do with plants? Why won’t my hydrangeas bloom? Nothing I plant will grow in that spot and it’s always wet there. What are those brown cocoon things hanging on the evergreens?
Where do you go to find the answers to these questions? Who do you ask? You ask All Seasons Grounds Management!

Well, All Seasons is now offering a free evaluation of your commercial property. Our expertise as landscape designers, certified nurserymen and horticulturalists allows us the ability to diagnosis problems and recommend solutions for your site. It is an opportunity to add a fresh perspective to a problem area and hopefully help you solve what has been bothering you. We will focus on six areas in our evaluation: soil and turf conditions, plant health, correct plant cultural practices, pest and disease diagnosis, appropriate plant choices, and drainage issues. We are here and happy to assist you in your efforts to make your property all you want it to be.

I overheard someone comment, when they saw a landscape company installing plants in the late fall, “Why are they planting now? Everyone knows you plant in the spring!” Well, actually late fall and winter here in Hampton Roads is a perfect time to plant. Most plants go through a dormant or rest period in the colder months and are less stressed because of abundant rain and cool temperatures. Taking advantage of these factors allows the plant to better acclimate to its new home and begin to extend its roots and come out of dormancy alive in the spring. So on a cold and rainy winter’s night rest assured that the shrubs or trees you planted in the fall are just fine and looking forward to the spring just as much as you are!

It’s said that if you don’t like the weather in Hampton Roads, you should wait five minutes. This year, we have probably endured one of the most brutal summers in recent memory, so suffice to say the weather didn’t change too much…unless you consider temperature dropping from 100 to 97 a major improvement! In terms of commercial landscaping, much of our time was spent making sure our clients’ greenery didn’t turn brown, and that all plants and flowers remained as fresh as the day they bloomed. This fall, however, we’ll take a different course as the weather gets cooler.

You may not think it important to plan gardening for September beyond keeping the grass mowed and shrubbery trimmed. Actually, Autumn is the best time to populate plain landscapes with trees and plant flowering bulbs that will bloom into tulips and daffodils by Spring. To keep the color in your gardens vivid through the cooler months, we look for plants and flowers that withstand the colder weather – Mums and ornamental cabbage are two examples that are attractive and hardy.

As the air cools, your soil may remain warm enough for grass seeding, which is best done in September. It is strongly recommend first, however, to make sure all lawns are thoroughly and properly weeded in order to get the best results. If you have trees on property, be sure to prepare them for the winter months by having their surrounding soil mulched. This helps reduce stress brought on the trees during the summer heat. Remember, they are living things and depend upon care to get through the winter!

If you need assistance with Autumn planting and landscape preparation for your commercial property, All Seasons is here for the Fall season…and any time of year. Feel free to contact us at 757-461-4737 with your questions about Norfolk and Virginia Beach commercial landscape services.
